Stainless steel is a steel alloy with chromium content. When steel is mixed with other elements like chromium, molybdenum, nickel, silicon, carbon, and aluminum it makes an alloy which is called stainless steel. Stainless steels are engineered materials with good corrosion resistance, strength and fabrication characteristics. They can readily meet a wide range of design criteria – low maintenance, service life and load-bearing capacity.
The advantage of having such a product in the market is that it can be milled into sheets, coils, bars, wires, plates, tubes, and pipes. Pipes and tubes made from diverse stainless steel grades are popular in the market and are offered depending upon the use and type of user. This post will discuss 6 popular categories of stainless steel pipes/tubing.
1. Standard Stainless Steel Pipes:
This is the most common and preferred type of stainless steel pipe available in the market. SS 304 and 316 is used for applications in regular environments – in homes, buildings, etc for decorative purpose. as it offers excellent resistance to weather, chemicals and corrosion. In industries with high temperatures – between 400°C to 800°C, SS304 and SS316 is not ideal and SS304L and SS316L is preferred and used.
2. Hydraulic Line Tubing:
These tubings are used for hydraulic systems, and fuel lines having small diameters. These tubes are made from SS 304L or SS 304 variants and are extremely durable and corrosion resistant.
3. Sanitary Tubing:
Sanitary tubing is used in food processing industries which require high standards of hygiene. Generally, sanitary tubing is made of ASTMA270 and is highly resistant to corrosion. The main advantage of this tubing is that it requires very low maintenance.
4. Aircraft Stainless Steel Tubing:
For all aircraft applications, heat and corrosion resistant nickel and chromium stainless steel is used. For welded stainless steel tubes and parts, stainless steel with low carbon is preferred. For applications requiring seamless as well as welded tubing, aircraft structural material which is manufactured as per Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS) or Military Specifications (MIL Specs) is used.
5. Pressure Stainless Steel Pipes:
Pressure stainless pipes are made to endure high pressure and high temperatures. They are made in large diameter and can be welded as per requirement and dimension. These pipes are made from an austenitic and ferritic variety of steel also known as the combination of nickel and chromium or solid chromium. The combination of these elements offers extra resistance to pipes. The different types of pressure pipes available in this variety are:
•Electric fusion welded pipes
•Welded pipes with large diameters for high temperature and corrosive applications
•Welded seamless austenitic and ferritic stainless steel pipes
•Corrosion resistant stainless steel pipes and tubes
6. Mechanical Tubing:
Stainless steel mechanical tubing is used in applications like bearings and cylinders. Grades ASTMA511 and A554 are generally employed for applications requiring mechanical tubing. These mechanical tubing can be custom made and are available in different shapes like round, rectangular and square.
